When I look back and reflect on the enthusiasm and energy my teachers brought to the classroom, and the impact they’ve had on my academic and personal growth, I am inspired to do the same.

The twin experiences of working as a graduate teaching assistant and a coach for a college-level Ultimate Frisbee team cemented Alex Lester’s commitment to becoming a teacher. “In addition to learning many important skills as a teacher and leader, I have had the invaluable opportunity to play a part in the personal growth of many of the students I have worked with. It is the power of this experience which makes teaching appealing to me.”
Alex uses the skills he learned as a scientist to teach science. “When I develop class exercises, I view it as a puzzle. I must figure out how to design an activity to have the students reach certain learning objectives while also challenging them and retaining their interest.” He hopes that his teaching will inspire students to gain the critical thinking skills and the confidence they need to be successful in whatever field they choose.
Alex received a BA in mathematics cum laude, before going on to earn a masters degree in civil and environmental engineering. He is a recipient of the William G. Pollard Scholarship and the National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship honorable mention. His internships include working at the Nature Conservancy and at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
