Bill was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. After high school, Bill spent four years in the U.S. Air Force where he was an Emergency Room Medic and Shift Supervisor. After the Air Force, Bill returned to Philadelphia where he attended Holy Family University earning a B.A. in Biology and Secondary Education.
For the next twelve years, Bill was a teacher and administrator at a small independent progressive alternative school in Philadelphia, where he taught math, military history, and science. Beginning in 1997, Bill was the Chairman of the Science department and in 1998 became the Dean of Students. Bill worked extensively with teachers in developing curriculum using the Understanding by Design Framework and assisting teachers in implementing Differentiated Instruction in their classrooms.
In 2008, Bill earned a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Holy Family University along with a Principal's Certification in Pennsylvania. Bill joined KSTF in September of 2008 as Biology Program Officer to assist in mentoring the new Biology Teaching Fellows cohort. Bill lives in Philadelphia with his wife and five cats. He is an avid student of Civil War history and a hard core road bicyclists logging 10,000-12,000 miles per year. He can be reached at wmccaffrey@kstf.org.
