Teaching Fellows' Meetings
2008 Biology Cohort Fellows' Meetings
October 24-25, 2008
The 2008 Biology cohort met in Denver, CO for their fall meeting. The 2008 cohorts (mathematics, biology, and physical science) are focusing on a common theme of “rate of change” as the introduction to the process of lesson study. Throughout this fellowship year, the fellows in all cohorts are working within this content area to explore their own content knowledge and consider how that knowledge is used in teaching.
On Friday morning the cohort worked with Dr. Larry Wakeford on examining student understanding and investigated current biology textbooks and their treatment of the concept of rate of change. Friday afternoon, the fellows worked with Dr. Steve Getty and Dr. Paul Numedahl from BSCS on exploring evolution in the geological record. This work built on the fellows study of the concept of rate of change in biology. The work was designed to deepen their content knowledge and also to examine how to translate this work into an inquiry based classroom.
On Saturday morning the fellows explored essential questions related to rate of change, possible student misconceptions, and the implicit/explicit treatment of rate of change in various science standards. In the afternoon, fellows utilized critical friends’ groups to clarify their reflective portfolio goals for the year.
