Edward D. Viner, M.D.

Edward Viner joined the KSTF Board of Trustees in May 2008.  Formerly Chief of Medicine at Cooper University Hospital, a position he held from 1987 to 2006, Dr. Viner was named Chairman of the Cooper Foundation Board in February 2008.  From 2006 to 2008, he was Cooper’s Senior Vice President  for Affiliations and External Development with responsibilities for raising awareness of the hospital within the business and medical communities; leading Cooper’s evolution to a four-year medical school; and fundraising.Dr. Viner specializes in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology and is currently a Professor of Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  One of the most respected and honored physicians at Cooper University Hospital, he received the prestigious designation of Master of the American College of Physicians in 2007.  In 2006, Dr. Viner became the first physician to hold the Edward D. Viner Chair for the Chief of Medicine at Cooper University Hospital, endowed in his honor by Frederick P. and Barbara A. Engstorm. 


Prior to assuming the position of Cooper’s Chief Of Medicine, Dr. Viner spent twenty-two years in the practice of internal medicine and hematology/oncology at Pennsylvania Hospital where he was also Head of Section of Hematology/Oncology; Director of Fellowship Training in these disciplines; and Co-Director of the Oncology Research Laboratory.   Concurrently, he was Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Viner is a recipient of numerous awards and honors, including laureateship from the American College of Physicians in 2003 and the Philadelphia Caring Award in 1984.  He has been named a Philadelphia “Top Doc” and New Jersey “Top Doc” many times and has regularly been on national lists of Best Doctors.  He has received funding from the National Cancer Institute and has served on a number of national committees, as well as authored medical publications and book chapters.

Dr. Viner graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 1956.  He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and obtained his postgraduate medical training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
